Forge Meets Forest Foraging Event

Chick of the Woods 1

Join Chick of the Woods on a relaxing walk through the forest looking for edible plants and mushrooms. We will start at NorthStar Forge with a brief discussion about foraging, safety, and identification tips. Then, we will head out into the woods, either sticking together or venturing off on your own, searching for forest treasures. After about two hours of foraging, we will meet back to look over and talk about the treasures you found. We hope to find plants like ramps, fiddlehead ferns, stinging nettle, or garlic mustard and mushrooms like oysters, morels, velvet foot, or pheasant backs. Please note we can’t harvest plants, but we can harvest mushrooms.  To avoid any sense of competition, all mushrooms will be split up evenly with the group at the end of the hunt to take home with you.

After foraging, we will review the mushrooms we found to make sure we didn’t get any poisonous mushrooms and discuss any mushrooms we didn’t talk about before the hunt. Finally, we will head back to NorthStar Forge in a delicious light tasting of wild, springtime mushrooms cooked up by Chick of the Woods herself.

*Please note that mushroom growth is subject to various environmental factors, and their presence during our foraging adventures cannot be guaranteed. We’ll do our best to find good spots, but our goal isn’t just about harvesting. It’s about learning so you can forage on your own. We’ll share the exact location and more details about the day with you at least 24 hours before the event.

*We will be walking off-trail and on uneven terrain.
*This is a rain or shine event, but if conditions are severe, the hunt will be cancelled and credit can be used towards a future Chick of the Woods event.
*If you have any food restrictions, please email to see if we can accommodate before signing up.
*Please bring a lawn chair and your own beverages.

More about Chick of the Woods: Founder Jaime Rockney has been foraging since 2009.  She is a member of the Minnesota Mycological Society and North American Mycological Association and has three certifications for identification of and selling mushrooms.

Her goal is to improve your confidence identifying mushrooms and other wild edibles in a fun and casual atmosphere.  “I certainly don’t claim to know them all, but we will focus on getting you familiar with the more common species.  I want to serve as a launching pad for your future, life-long, foraging hobby . . . Above all, I want the entire world to gain a greater appreciation for the importance and healing powers of nature.”
